Not Enough Women in Technology

Play and read this slideshow presentation to learn about some of the challenges that women face in technology.

Research Shows the Numbers are Low

According to a Google survey, cited on the DreamHost website under the article, 'The State of Women in Tech 2020', many girls don't know what computer science or engineering is. Survey respondents describe the work as "difficult". It can also be thought of as sitting at a desk for long hours and being on a computer. From my experience, girls tend to back out of the field because they don't see other people like them. The Forbes website mentions under the article, 'Women in Tech: Inconvenient Truths and Changing Perspectives', how in 2019, industry analyst Michael Krigsman interviewed two women working in IT about the percentage of their peers being women in the field. The results were 13% of women in the Fortune 500, about 65 of 500 companies, which is unfortunate to hear. The Forbes website also says how American executive Betsey Atkins says that Fortune 500 companies increased 6.4% of women, from 2.6%, but then the percentage decreased in 2018. To increase these numbers, we need to look at ways to promote women in tech.

Facts from 2020

Statistics show a lack of women in technology
A shortage of women in technology, specifically in engineering
Lack of women holding leadership roles in technology
Lack of women in computing within technology

Why does the world need more women in tech?

What do women bring to the table?

  • First off, women are leaders.
  • Women are excellent mentors, not just for other women, but for all.
  • When women have other women who empower and support them in the workplace, they have the confidence, perseverance, and determination to stand up for what they believe to continue creating impact within tech.
  • They create more productive teams by enforcing collaboration and teamwork by making everyone's contributions and unique thoughts valuable, especially for other women in the workplace.
  •  Women are great negotiators, and mentors. They articulate their opinions and ideas, especially when they have more people in the workplace empowering them to do so.
  • Support and motivation have come a long way! Women communicate effectively and have the ability to tackle the starts of problems and conflicts, to find solutions in a team effort.
  • Women are skilled leaders and can continue to increase the potential in other women by leading and mentoring others to solve real-world problems collaboratively if they are empowered and appreciated more in tech.
  • Women feel more confident in the tech space when they see more women in the workplace. They have created tremendous change within the tech industry and can continue to do so if they are further empowered and appreciated.
